  1. Thanks for the great article Sonia. I struggle with having too many ideas! My purse is so full of crinkled post-it notes that I have a hard time finding my car keys.

And, my husband is always begging me to get my piles of notecards, sheets of paper, and napkins with scribblings off of the kitchen table.

He calls them my, ‘ramblings of a mad woman.’ You get my point.

Anyway. I have these daily moments of insane inspiration and idea overload. But when I go back to them, I find it hard to be enthused about my ideas.

Many of them don’t seem to have enough substance to turn into content.

And, sometimes, I just can’t seem to determine how I can make them valuable for others.

Also, another struggle is that a lot of my ideas would translate better into thought-provoking, essay-style blog posts.

For example, a post about, ‘why I’m choosing not to have kids,’ could be really interesting, but it doesn’t necessarily answer a question for someone else.

I suppose that I am craving a process that can help me turn these ideas into solid content.

I would like to establish a balance between inspirational, thought-provoking content that is still actionable for others.

Thanks again! Looking forward to the next post as always.

  2. Thanks for this great post, Sonia. First, I think there is at least SOME comfort in recognizing that you’re not the only one who hits that “what do I write about now?” place!

I really relate to several things mentioned in this post. My greatest asset for keeping the writing ideas coming is my journaling. So many cool fresh topics show up there unexpectedly! My journals are a rich source of new topics.

Another element that works great for me is keeping the distinction drawn between idea-generation and article-creation. Free-writing sessions are a proven go-to for me. In working with my book writing clients, too, this is an effective way to dispel the ebb of creative juices that inevitably shows up along the way.

All of these are great tools to keep in the writer’s toolbox! Thanks so much for sharing. I always enjoy your posts and learn something along the way!

    • Hey Jane! Thanks for mentioning that you get ideas from your journal. I’ve been journaling almost every day for a year and I haven’t gone back to read it yet.

I was planning on reading it within the next few weeks, just for fun.

But now, I will be paying close attention to what article topics I can pull from it. Thanks again.

  3. Hey Sonia,

Most of the time, I feel like something new should come up to write about. In this hazy world of numerous writers, getting a new idea can be really easy.

I like what Stefani has mentioned. If we listen to others while talking, something interesting can be noticed.

In the last couple of years, I struggled many times but it always turns out that reading more generates more writing ideas.

    Thanks for sharing with us.

  4. Writing is a challenge – all the time.

I too write down the ideas as they come to me. Earlier I used Evernote to jot it down, now I simply start a new post and write few sentences.

And then I come back later to work upon it.

My ideas brain keeps working all the time. If it clicks, I write and then the magic unfolds every time.

    Awesome roundup Sonia.

  5. Hey,

    great article.

One of my best ways is to switch over to copyblogger.com, read a headline, get inspired and write for 8 minutes.

    then edit – ready 😉

  6. Quora.

Today I took out my little book of ideas (I carry it everywhere now) and jotted down some questions for the blog.
The great thing about this is that I also get to read comments from other people which serves as a form of research, too.

I’m implementing this within the coming weeks.

  7. This is a great article. I have tried a lot of these article writing ideas but not all of them so thanks for the tips.

I feel brainstorming is a great way to work out questions and building a long form answer.

Coming up with something new every time is a massive challenges especially when it has to be unique and targeted at the same time.

I’ve bookmarked it, so I can come back and try some of the new tips thanks copyblogger keep inspiring us all 🙂

  8. Great article! My well runs dry all the time and in addition to that, I’m not the greatest writer in the world. Sooo, when I’m looking for something to talk about, I’ll Google people who are in my profession but live in another state. I get ideas from their blog and there you have it, the well is full again.

Also, when I do get an idea, I’m not usually at the computer so I’ve gotten in the habit of making a note in my Iphone. Anyway, thanks for the great post.

  9. Thank you all for this post. I find that I have ideas sporadically throughout the day, so I like to get in the habit of jotting thoughts down in the notes section on my phone, or even recording 5 to 10 minute memos of something that’s on my mind. With that said I am also a fan of zoning out writing free hand.

  10. I watch documentaries that have nothing to do with my topic. It’s amazing how often my brain will suddenly go “Ooooh!” and make a random connection between whatever I need to write about and the documentary I’m watching!
