I haven’t posted about RSS much lately, since there’s been very little going on.
But this week Gabe Rivera of TechMeme announced a very cool use of RSS—he pulls posts from his sponsor’s blogs via feed and displays them in the sponsor area.
Great content is the advertisment (as it should be).
That’s very cool, and there’s a lot more to explore in the area that Gabe is blazing a trail in.
Now today, Text Link Ads released Feedvertising, a free WordPress plugin that allows you to rotate sponsored advertising copy and links in your RSS feed. If you’re reading this via feed (or email) right now, look down at the bottom to see an example.
Now, besides being in a more effective text format (as opposed to a banner ad), here’s the really cool part about Feedvertising:
You can use the technology to manage ads, whether or not you ever accept an ad brokered by TLA. So, this means you can use Feedvertising to:
- Manage and display ads you sell in house
- Promote affiliate programs
- Promote your other blogs
- Link to just about anything you want
All for free.
Another great thing is you can rotate the ads automatically. So, you can display different ads to keep it fresh, or you can test different copy and link text to see what gets the best response.

I watched the video and one thing does pop up in my mind: Why do I have to manage my Feed-Ads over the feedvertiser site and not through a panel in my blog? Personally, I will not use this plugin because of this…
Well, you’ll have to ask TLA that, but I would imagine that in order to provide the option to accept ads that they sell for you, you need to be in their interface. It’s not exactly kid’s stuff to make that work.
You know, just like the Feedburner Ad Network requires you to use their adminstration.
And Pheedo too.
