Have You Ever Thought About Starting Your Own Podcast?

What’s holding you back?

It’s called Podcasting 101 — Quick Start + Pro Tips and will be held on Friday, February 28 at 1:00 p.m.

The event is being presented by two of the best voices in the business: Robert Bruce (Copyblogger’s VP of Media) and Sonia Simone (our Chief Content Officer).

Robert and Sonia — both college radio alums with popular podcasts under their belt like “Internet Marketing for Smart People” and “New Rainmaker” — present a mercifully simple introduction into the world of professional podcasting.

  • How to submit your podcast to iTunes

    I’m glad to see CB doing this. Podcasting has really exploded with the mobile and it’s a good thing.

    I love to read and I (try to) love to write. Podcasts can bridge the two in the best way; they let us hear the voice of the person speaking. We need that connection in our increasingly technological world.

  3. Podcasting is great, especially with SMART phones and bluetooth enabled cars. I did one for a while years ago, but the time commitment was pretty extensive. Some of the latest tools make this easier, but it still takes time to edit, process and upload. My suggestion is to make sure you have the time window on a regular basis and set a longer term commitment to produce a series. That way, listeners can subscribe and follow you on a regular basis.

    • Yeah, I agree John, that at least keeps the barrier high for those who are willing to do the work. That it is a lot of work, those who persist and get better will ultimately be the podcasts that everyone listens to.

    I just started listening to New Rainmaker yesterday and it’s now on my short list. I dig the NPR vibe (wasn’t sure the first couple of minutes but loved it over time.) And I must say the voice of Robert Bruce was not what I expected based on his reclusive online demeanor. Great work Robert…no need to reply to this comment. 😉

    Anyhow, looking forward to Podcast 101.

    • Chris, it will all depend on how much quality matters to you. Just getting started, I wouldn’t worry about getting fancy equipment … yet. Indulge your excitement and start getting the process down. Eventually you will want to get an external mic (which can range from $50-500), and then after that you may even want an external mixer. But take it one step at a time. For now, just start.

    Love the idea. 1 question; would connectivity be an issue? I live in some deep tropical areas….the connectivity is spotty at best. Cry me a river, I know 😉 But if I could upload quickly enough with a sometimes poor connect I would hop on the Podcast train because I love broadcasting and sharing.

    • Ryan, if you are attempting to record interviews over a poor connection, that could be an issue. If you are simply recording yourself talking, then uploading, you’ll be fine because the quality won’t be impacted by the slow connection … it’ll just take longer to upload the final file.

    This is very timely for me. I am starting to build my platform, and I just saw this post ! I am going to start video podcasting from my homebase.

    I prefer speaking to writing, but I know how important both are. It is a great point that people have different preferences in the way they like to receive their content.

    I have seen other marketers and publishers use video at the top of their blog, and the written content below.

    I plan on using this approach to handle both audiences in one place.

  10. I’m glad to see you promoting podcasting on this level. It’s one of the new mediums that is here to stay! The clients I work with find it to be a gradual growth that eventually explodes their client-base and business growth. Way to go… good post.
